Introduction to Leadership

Leadership refers to taking responsibility for one’s objectives, plans, goals and duties. Leadership is responsibility. You may not be in a leadership role but that does not mean you have no leadership responsibility. You must be responsible for your own plans, life and goals. This is self-leadership. Self-leadership is important because it makes you self-aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Self-knowledge is the beginning or pathway to effective leadership. The kind of personality you carry depends on the kind of mindset you have nurtured yourself in. Effective leaders are responsible to themselves first and then to the people they manage.

Negative Behaviors Affecting Leadership

Effective leaders are always making efforts to improve upon themselves (grow their skills and abilities). Let us remember that leadership is not only about leading others or a group of people. It is about being able to rule and manage our lives first and then that of others. Don’t expect to be an effective leader if you can’t put your stuff in order. Some negative leadership behaviors include:

  • Stereotyping and discriminating other people’s abilities, success and accomplishments
  • Ignorance (refusing to learn)
  • Not delegating work
  • Forcing people to look up to you/ believe in you.

Effective Leadership Traits

  • Ability to manage conflict
  • High energy level and tolerance for stress
  • People skills (relating with people effectively and being there for them in their utmost time of need)
  • Technical skills (understanding your job/role in an organization)
  • Conceptual skills (effective problem solving for tasks and duties)
  • Personal integrity
  • Self-control/self-confidence and personal integrity
  • High need for achievement
  • Leaders celebrate people (learn how to celebrate the successes and accomplishments of others. e.g. Job promotions/new jobs, success stories, birthdays, etc.)

Exercise:

Ask yourself; do I possess any of the above leadership qualities? What can I do to make myself an effective leader based on the above definition and traits of leadership?
